Vidya Gyan was the proud co-sponsor of a multi-dimensional function, Kotah

Vidya Gyan was the proud co-sponsor of a multi-dimensional function held on March 11, 2015 in village Kotah, District Saharanpur, under the kind leadership of Saharanpur District Magistrate (DM) Dr. Indravir Singh Yadav and Chief Development Officer (CDO) Ms. Monika Rani. At Vidya Gyan’s request, Dr. Yadav graciously asked various district level officers to coordinate and organize the event in the village, the hometown of Vidya Gyan co-founder Dr. Vijendra Agarwal. The event was held under the tent in the front yard of Agarwals home where he was born and spent his childhood and youthful years playing and doing things typical of anyones growing up. The entire event focused on various government plans broadly related to education and health, two major themes of Vidya Gyan’s future vision. This get-together attracted more than 500 people including children, men, and women from 16 different villages within about five kilometers of Kotah.

In addition to the DM and CDO, other district level officers gracing the occasion included Ms. Anjana Sirohi, Alpa Sankhyak Kalyan Adhikari (Minority Welfare Officer), Dr. Sunil Varma, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Mr. R.K.Tewari, District Inspector of Schools, and Mr. Vinay Kumar,Basic Shiksha Adhikari (Primary Education Officer), all accompanied with other staff members. Each of them discussed a number of government sponsored development plans related to education and health covering primary and secondary education, nutrition and child development, pre-natal care for pregnant women, vaccination and immunization among infants and others. The physicians and medical/health professionals from the area Primary Health Care Center had several booths for physical checkup of children and pregnant women, and they distributed free medicines and nutritional supplements. Dr. Yadav reminded the village folks that it is very unfortunate that the free nutritional supplement provided by the government at a significant expense of about INR 45 per kilogram (about 35 c/lb.) is being used as animal feed. This, in part, is due to the lack of education and understanding of the benefits of the nutritional supplement.

The event began with customary prayers by children. Dr. Agarwal and other community leaders welcomed DM Yadav, CDO Rani, and other officers by presenting them the flowers on behalf of the community. A major highlight of the function was a green signal by the District Magistrate and Chief Development Officer to a group of over one hundred school children with a banner of School Chalo Abhiyan (encouraging child education). These children went around the village and when they returned Vidya Gyan offered laddus (an Indian sweet) as a token of appreciation for their effort. Packed lunch and water was also offered to children and women on behalf of Minority Welfare office. Everyone was served tea by Vidya Gyan volunteers during the function.

The event lasted about two hours with the traditional offering of a shawl by Agarwal family to the District Magistrate on behalf of Vidya Gyan and the village community, a longstanding tradition to honor the chief guest and as an expression of sincere appreciation. The District Magistrate was very gracious to offer the shawl back to Vijendra Agarwal reciprocating his appreciation for hosting the event.
